Job Description:

PRIMARY FOCUS/ MANDATE:

This position is responsible for providing assistance in budgeting, forecasting, financial analysis and moth-end reporting. Junior Financial analyst (JFA) liaises with all the department heads to ensure effectiveness of the approved budget. The JFA is also responsible for monitoring actual results and proposing and implementing cost mitigation strategies for cost over-runs. In addition, JFA is responsible to monitor, evaluate, and perform trend analysis on different options relating to projects being carried out by the company.

SPECIFIC ACCOUNTABILITIES

MONTH END REPORTING (OPERATION P&L)

  • Assist in variance reporting - ensure completeness of actual results, compare actual results to budget and forecast for all operational P&L costs on a monthly basis.

  • Ensuring actual costs are coded correctly therefore knowledge of assumptions made within the budget is required.

  • Use Management Reporter (modifying rows/columns) for cost analysis.

  • Assist in preparing inventory analysis through which changes in inventory will be identified, reviewed and allocated to various cost centers.

COST FORECAST

  • Through regular analysis, the analyst will assist the Supervisor, Financial Analysis in identifying changes to the operational budget to update the forecast.

  • Changes will include:

  • Identifying future cost savings

  • Identifying areas where actual costs will be over the original budget.

  • Identifying timing vs permanent differences for YTD (year-to-date) variances

  • The analyst will also be responsible for providing the Supervisor, Financial Analysis with explanations for changes and variances.

OPERATIONAL BUDGET

  • Compile budgets supporting schedules for review focusing on total and unit cost behavior vs. prior year

  • Critically examine the budget schedules for correctness, accuracy and completeness

  • Assist in finalizing the templates to be distributed to department managers and VP’s and assist departments with preparation of budgets.

  • COST SAVING MEASURES

  • Identification of future cost savings through analysis and understanding of variances between actual and budgeted amounts.

  • Reviewing more in-depth analysis of costs that are continuously over budget for identifying possibilities for cost savings.

  • Communicating trends to the Supervisor, Financial Analysis

TEAMWORK

  • Education Liaise with all company department to ensure that maintenance area is cost effective and that cost saving opportunities are realized

OTHER

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, accounting, finance, or related field preferred.

  • Working towards a professional designation (CMA, CGA, CA or CPA).

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 1-3 years’ experience in Financial and Cost Analysis.

COMPETENCIES & ATTRIBUTES:

  • Ability to rapidly process and comprehend large amounts of detailed information.

  • Demonstrate appropriate understanding / working knowledge of accounting principles and internal controls and apply them.

  • Demonstrated success in multi-tasking during high stress situations with minimal supervision.

  • Proven ability to work independently in a fast-paced dynamic environment;

  • A solid working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel (V-Lookup, Pivot)

  • Good planning and organizational skills to balance and prioritize work.

  • Demonstrated excellence in communication skills including ability to communicate in an effective, clear, accurate, concise and professional manner.

  • Ensure a consistently high-level of quality in service provided relative to both timeliness and accuracy.

  • Authorized to live and work in Canada and obtain a Transport Canada Restricted Area Pass.
