This position requires up to 35 hours per week, 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. with the possibility of early morning arrival or other shift adjustments.

JOB SUMMARY:

This temporary Career Edge internship supports the City’s Waste & Environmental Management Section during the transition to Ontario’s new producer-responsibility Blue Box program. The role is rooted in day-to-day waste operations but includes a strong administrative and data management component to assist with project coordination, database development, and operational readiness tasks related to the 2026 transition.

Working under the supervision of the Supervisor, Waste Operations, the intern will assist with customer service delivery, depot operations, field inspections, inventory tracking, and coordination with contractors, while also supporting internal reporting, data entry, and communication activities related to waste collection performance and Blue Box program implementation.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the day-to-day operation of Markham’s waste and recycling programs, including coordination with the City’s collection contractor and depot operations staff
  • Conduct site visits and assist with field inspections for new development waste collection, container delivery, and compliance verification
  • Assist in the development, population, and maintenance of operational databases to track eligible/ineligible Blue Box sources, depot materials, and container inventories
  • Collect and organize data from internal and external partners for import into GIS and other data management platforms
  • Support communication and customer service activities by logging inquiries, tracking responses, and assisting in the preparation of public information materials related to waste collection
  • Provide administrative assistance for key operational projects, including contractor coordination, report preparation, and Health & Safety documentation
  • Participate in community events and public outreach activities, as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the City’s waste operations and transition readiness

REQUIREMENTS

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Completed post-secondary education in Environmental Studies, Geography, Engineering, Planning, Public Administration, or a related field
  • Previous experience in waste management operations, municipal services, or field data collection is an asset
  • Prior experience with administrative or project coordination work (e.g., data entry, scheduling, reporting) preferred

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, and Outlook
  • Experience with GIS or spatial data tools considered an asset
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a small team environment
  • Strong customer service orientation and comfort in field environments
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, with flexibility to adapt to changing priorities

Additional Requirements:

  • Must possess a valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license with a driving record satisfactory to the City
  • Ability to work occasional early mornings, evenings, or weekends as operationally required
  • Comfortable working in outdoor conditions and performing moderate lifting (up to 18 kg)
  • Ability to report to work at 8100 Warden Avenue, Markham
